  • 2008-05-16 /S/D/ Obama Is Muslim? (by James Taranto) a potpourri of news stories, with commentary; the lead section is a discussion of Luttwak's President Apostate? article in the New York Times, with a very weak defense: “Well, good for McCain, anyway. Even if some Times writers think Obama is a Muslim, that's no excuse for calling him "Barack Hussein Obama." How would Mrs. Clinton like it if people started calling her "Hillary Ruhollah Khomeini"?” That is, in fact, Obama's full name, so one can only think this was an en passant attack on Obama, along with the more obvious attacks on the Times and Clinton, and praise for McCain. Hmm, could there be an agenda here?
  • 2008-03-28 /S/D/ Deeper and Deeper by James Taranto: “Does this mean he would have left? Or does it mean he would have stayed but felt uncomfortable? And when did Wright apologize? Blogger Tom Maguire undertakes an extensive investigation, and the answer appears to be: Never. In fact, Obama came close to apologizing to Wright.”
  • 2005-08-11 /S/D/ Not another one “Cheers to Eugene Volokh for opening commments on this post. If it weren’t for that decision, I might have simply been appalled by Professor Volokh’s willingness to pass on a vicious smear of war opponents. I would likely have missed how poorly sourced the insinuations about the marital faithfulness of a dead man were.” ... “Of course, James Taranto carelessly uses this sort of language all the time, and readers know damn well who he’s talking about. It’s not referring to a handful of psychopaths and extremists who hardly need refuting. It’s aimed at opponents of the war in Iraq, who aren’t anti-war, just on the other side. In the past few years, we’ve seen a constant, sickening effort on the part of supporters of the war in Iraq to conflate opposition the war with support for terrorists.”
  • 2005-07-08 /S/D/ Best of the Web Today (by James Taranto) "Root, Root, Root for the Bomb Team": “That's right, the Times is complaining that "wealthy nations have not done enough about the root causes of terrorism"! Now granted, one can talk of the root causes of terrorism without slipping into liberal weeniedom. This column has long endorsed the theory that terrorism springs from the tyrannical and fanatical political culture that prevails in most of the Arab and Muslim worlds. The Bush administration subscribes to this theory too, which is why it has embarked upon a strategy of democratization, a key element of which was regime change in Iraq. .. Do the editorialists at the Times disagree with this theory? No, apparently they are completely oblivious to it. First they complain about the failure to deal with "root causes," then they scratch their collective head over why we're "mired in Iraq."”
  • 2004-01-21 /S/D/ Best of the Web Today (by James Taranto) a potpourri of news items, including "The al Qaeda Cheering Section": “The most telling moment in last night's speech came after the president noted that "key provisions of the Patriot Act are set to expire next year." In response, notes the New York Times, "some critics in Congress applauded enthusiastically." If Osama bin Laden watched the speech, one imagines him applauding too.” Actually, no, he's not much in favor of civil rights, and would probably be dismayed by the setback after such a promising initial crackdown. Fortunately, he needn't have worried (speaking of "appeasement").
