About

The right to employment is the idea that any individual seeking employment has a right to obtain employment.

Aliases

It is more commonly referred to as a "right to work", but this phrase is ambiguous due to its different meaning in the United States. It is also not completely accurate, in that employment is the issue; finding work has never been a problem.

Analysis

While this is often presented as a left-wing viewpoint diametrically opposite the right-wing view that employment is a privilege rather than a right, it is in fact consistent with the right-wing framing of employment as the only legitimate means of making a living and as the only legitimate type of work.

In a society where jobs are increasingly being automated and where there remain unlimited quantities of valuable but non-profitable work, the right-wing position no longer makes sense in terms of overall benefit to society.
