"Memetic success" is the degree to which an idea (or meme) spreads more because of its meme-ish attributes than because of any inherent value or benefit the idea may have. An idea may enjoy memetic success in addition to being successful for its inherent benefit; it may also enjoy memetic success while either conferring no inherent benefit or even while being actively harmful.
