The one area Chomsky's piece seems to overlook is: what is Pakistan's position on the event? What was their position beforehand? Did we ask them for permission to go in? If so, did they grant it?
According to Wikipedia, it would seem that the following are true:
- There is strong evidence that Pakistan was not operating in good faith (may have been alerting terror suspects of US raids)
- Pakistan has post-facto not complained about the event ("Pakistan's ambassador to the United states said both countries "cooperated in making sure" that the operation leading to Osama bin Laden's death was "successful" and that President Obama called and thanked President Zardari for his cooperation.")
So that does seem to put some holes in Chomsky's case.
I'd really like to hear what Pakistani bloggers have to say about the matter. Does the Pakistani-in-the-street agree that the raid was a reasonable measure, under the circumstances? Or are there additional circumstances we haven't been made aware of?
