The goals of rational discourse are, with rule #2 taking precedence:
- improved common understanding
- i.e. a higher level of agreement between individuals about the nature of reality
- a better understanding of reality
- i.e. a more accurate understanding of reality itself, on the part of either participant (preferably both, in accordance with rule #1)
