The goals of rational discourse are, with rule #2 taking precedence:

  1. improved common understanding
    • i.e. a higher level of agreement between individuals about the nature of reality
  2. a better understanding of reality
    • i.e. a more accurate understanding of reality itself, on the part of either participant (preferably both, in accordance with rule #1)
