Although such warfare can be bloodless and relatively harmless overall (e.g. "the cola wars"), human lives often do get caught up in the memes' battles for survival (e.g. the meme of Nazism was one of the major causes of World War II and The Holocaust, though there are countless examples throughout history – to the point of cliché – of physical warfare being waged for essentially meme-ish ends). Even when no lives are lost, however, meme warfare can cause economic damage [?].
