Woozle notes
The attack on Freeman Dyson was a bit ad hominem, as there is nothing inherently nonsensical about the idea of a nuke-powered spacecraft; several different versions have been proposed by different people. Unfortunately, all of the ground-launching ones are now banned by international treaty, as I understand it, despite the fact that it might provide substantially cheaper access to space -- something which is desperately needed for a number of reasons.
Also, Ray Kurzweil may well be right about nanotech and energy – there has been quite a lot of progress just recently in the area of energy generation – but the author is still quite correct in saying that we can't wait around for deus ex machinae to solve the problem.
