The May 8, 2012 election in North Carolina passed an amendment defining marriage as being between a man and a woman, preventing government recognition of civil unions and same-sex marriage, even those legally performed in other states.
The backlash against this victory for "conservative" fundamentalism was immediate, and is tentatively expected to result in quicker progress for gay rights in NC than would have been possible otherwise.
