US/national emergency
Overview
The United States has been in a state of national emergency since September 14, 2001, beginning with the initial declaration by President George W. Bush on that date and renewed by the President every year since.
Against the hopes of many who voted for him, President Obama renewed the declaration for an additional year on September 10, 2009.
There is much speculation, especially in the self-identified conservative media[1][2] regarding the implications of the ongoing state of emergency, including theories that the declaration gives the President "greater control of the military" and "special wartime powers"[3]. A related theory is that it now exists primarily to conceal the implementation of Continuity of Government plans, which would essentially supersede the normal democratic operation of the US federal government.
