Critical race theory (CRT) is a graduate-level academic and legal framework which explores how laws, policies, and procedures function to produce racial inequality. It emerged in the 1980s from a group of legal scholars trying to answer the question of why substantive racial inequality continued to be a problem even after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 erased formal legal inequality between racial groups.

Right-wing political actors began inaccurately using CRT in 2021 as a fear-label to suppress teaching of essentially anything that has to do with the continuing existence and effects of racism in the United States.
