  • 1. A subsistence-level or higher wage is necessary to sustain availability of labour. Consistently paying below-subsistence wages indicates that the economic activity supported by them is not, in fact, sufficiently profitable to warrant a fair-market claim to those inputs.
  • 3. That there exists a natural bargaining advantage in favor of employers over labour, again established by Smith...
  • 4. That a well-formed minimum wage is not an "arbitrary price control", but a recognition in law of these economic facts, and a shift of burden from workers to employers to demonstrate economic viability....
  • 5. That the alternative of abandoning labor to "starve to death (or more likely commit crimes and be given 'welfare' via the prison system)", as /u/NakedAndBehindYou so charmingly puts it, is neither morally nor economically desirable: that the costs of productivity loss, of criminal activity, of prison costs, and of likely negative public health consequences, of which TDR-TB would be one particularly interesting case (though hardly the only example one could suggest), would far outweight any possible economic benefit....
  • 10. That a failure of enterprise to provide subsistence-level or greater wages suggests either a gross power imbalance between labour and employers, or, and more troubling, a state of economic stagnation and/or decline, again as illuminated by Smith....
  • 11. It's on this last point in which I tend to diverge from much of the mainstream viewpoint of either the right or the left, and draw instead strongly from the Limits to Growth and Collapse literature. Long-term economic decline cannot be addressed only through short-term shifts in tax and welfare policies. If it's to be managed at all it would be through a deliberate de-growth policy, one in which equity would have to be a significant component if major structural breakdowns and costs are to be avoided.
