We actually have done meals with him a handful of times over the past year, but he mostly just danced around politics and would change subjects. This time, though, even though I tried to divert his interest by going into some things I'd recently discovered about a computer system he used to have in his lab in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he let that subject die out and quickly dove back into some topics he'd obviously been pushing recently -- mainly involving global warming skepticism. I knew I was probably doomed as soon as he mentioned Peter Morecombe.
(I've been forwarded a not-yet-published paper by himself and Morecombe, which I probably shouldn't post yet but which seems to be an argument that CO2 rise will be a net benefit to humankind, a myth (also) currently being heavily promoted by the fossil fuel industry.)
...and then, to top it off, he got into attacking "Darwinism":
