[ Dialectical open-mind thinking .. Guidelines for Dialectical thinking ]

This is not really a good representation of my understanding of dialectics. The way I understand it...

  • dialectics is a form of conversation about truth (evidenced truth, working towards objective truth)
  • its opposite is persuasion, where one person has a "truth" they wish the other to accept (believed-truth or, more often, broadcast-truth)
  • it does not hold that two contradictory things can be true at the same time -- or at least not completely true
  • it does hold that each of those two things might be true, in part or in whole, and the point of talking about it is to share evidence and arrive at the conclusion that seems closest to the truth suggested by the evidence.
