About

A troll phrase is any phrase which:

  • implies a relationship that is inaccurate or even self-contradictory
  • is used repeatedly as a means of attacking certain ideas, despite its inaccuracy

Troll phrases generally do not express a coherent point of view and thus cannot be coherently argued with; one must first show how the implied relationship is fallacious before moving on. This usually has the effect of derailing the conversation, a goal often sought by trolls – hence the name "troll phrase".

Troll phrases are a form of rhetorical deception due to their ability to derail rational dialogue.
