About

An unwanted pregnancy is a pregnancy which the mother would prefer to terminate (through abortion if necessary) for any of a number of possible reasons.

The frequent occurrence of unwanted pregnancies worldwide is almost universally seen as a problem, though "pro-life" and "pro-choice" political factions advocate very different solutions.

  • Teen pregnancy is often used as a proxy for unwanted pregnancy. The reasons this is so are not entirely clear, but include:
    • Teenagers (of the ages usually under discussion) are too young to be legally having sex.
    • Teenagers are almost never prepared (economically and otherwise) to raise a child.
    • Many teenage girls are not physically mature enough to give birth safely.
  • Many unwanted pregnancies may also be unintended, but some unintended pregnancies are wanted and some intended pregnancies become unwanted (most commonly due to medical issues). Unintended pregnancies are not a problem per se; a problem only exists if the pregnancy is unwanted.
