In response to this post which made the chronic Libertarian complaint about social welfare programs taking "other people's money" and thereby causing the inevitable destruction of civilization, the following discussion occurred. (There were many other comments, but I'm including only those relevant to the topic I raised.)

I've broken this up into parts, each starting with a comment I made.

  • /Woozle 1: I argue that the Bush tax cuts were a bigger contribution to the meltdown than social "entitlements"; ESR describes this as "an article of faith" and dismisses it
  • /Woozle 2: I ask how libertarians would solve basic social problems, and am told to go RTFM
  • /other: ESR doubts the existence of "society" when it doesn't suit his goals
