Overview
A doctroversy is any "controversy" which only exists due to conflict with doctrine (usually religious), rather than any notable ambiguity in the available evidence; in the minds of most reasonable people, there isn't any question to resolve.
The word is a portmanteau of "doctrine" and "controversy".
Examples
- evolution by natural selection
- abiogenesis
- gay marriage
- The 2008 sacred wafer scandal erupted largely over the question of whether transubstantiation is literally true, consequently what degree of crime is committed when a Eucharist wafer is "abused" (i.e. handled in ways contrary to doctrine)
