- Reagan administration (dates unknown): member of the Senate Armed Services Committee staff
- 1982-1985: speechwriter for Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger
- Reagan administration (dates unknown): Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs and Pentagon spokesperson.
