Production ownership – or, more precisely, ownership of the means of production – refers to one of the major attributes that distinguish different economic systems.
Some examples:

| capitalism | private citizens, largely for their own benefit |
| socialism | workers/employees |
| communism | the government, supposedly on behalf of the people |
