status quo (noun): how things are currently, the way things currently work

The status quo across much of the world in early 2020 involves a few rich people owning a majority of everything, most people needing employment in order to survive, living-wage jobs being scarce (but widely believed to be plentiful), funding for public services being cut, and advertising being the primary force in elections.
