Venezuela is a country in South America which has become controversial (at least within the United States) for a number of reasons.

They are a major source of oil (one of the five founding members of OPEC [W]; they own Citgo [W]).

Chavez administration

Hugo Chavez [W] was president of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013.

  • Chavez was heavily critical of United States foreign policy.
  • His administration increasingly clamped down on civil rights, including free speech [1]
  • 2002: the administration announced an official policy requiring the use of only open-source software in all government agencies (including the government-owned oil industry) within two years [2]
