Venezuela is a country in South America which has become controversial (at least within the United States) for a number of reasons.

  • Their current president, Hugo Chavez, has been heavily critical of United States foreign policy
  • Their government has been increasingly clamping down on civil rights, including free speech [1]
  • They are a major source of oil (one of the five founding members of OPEC; they own Citgo)
  • They recently passed a law which will require all government agencies (including the government-owned oil industry) to convert, within two years, to using only open-source software [2]
