Beau argues compellingly that this is just right-wing scaremongery. I'd hate to be wrong, but I feel like Beau makes a solid rational case while Hedges just makes an emotional one. The wild card here is that Putin is clearly almost as nuts as Trump -- and has a lot more control than Trump ever did, although he is rapidly losing it. Here's hoping we don't have to depend yet again on the wise and brave disobedience of underlings to save us.
