Overview
The United States has been in a state of national emergency since September 14, 2001, having been declared by President George W. Bush on that date and renewed by the President every year since.
Against the hopes of many who voted for him, President Obama renewed the declaration for an additional year on September 10, 2009.
There is much speculation that the state of emergency now exists primarily to conceal the implementation of Continuity of Government plans, which would essentially supersede the normal democratic operation of the US federal government.
