If I decided to live among the Cherokee, I would expect to see symbols of their culture, religion and history everywhere. A totem pole on the high school grounds would not threaten my personal beliefs.

I would never question the right of an African American community to display reminders of their heritage and uniqueness as a people. If a copy of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation hung in their county courthouse, it wouldn’t infringe on my rights as an American or an individual.

And, quite frankly, a plaque of the ten commandments in the Johnson County courthouse in the heart of the Bible belt seems completely appropriate to me. It is, after all, the foundation of our legal system, our morals, and our principles. Why should we be forced to give up a symbol of our history that is hurting no one?
