The danger of an asteroid impact on the Earth's surface is one that has been largely ignored until fairly recently. Although impacts severe enough to be a threat to human life are fairly rare (on the order of one per century), larger impacts posing a threat to millions of lives or even to all life on Earth are inevitable over the long term.
