War on liberalism
About
The war on liberalism is an ongoing effort by the political right wing in the United States to discredit a specific set of ideas which they refer to as "liberalism", although that word more properly includes other ideas as well.
The specific ideas under question appear to be those most crucial to a free society such as tolerance, providing for the general welfare, equality before the law, and the rule of law. Ironically, and completely in keeping with the political right's modus operandi, they are calling these ideas unpatriotic, dangerous to liberty, and likely to cause the destruction of the United States.
A common tactic is to equate liberalism with socialism, which itself has been tainted by association with totalitarian regimes such as those in Russia and China.

Isn't Liberalism based on the idea that we should lend a helping hand to the oppressed and poor? Or, does Liberalism slowly take the individual's freedoms away through a steady increase in government interference in our lives and our pocketbooks?"

- 2005-08-31 [L..T] Hannity blamed "anti-war left" for protest at soldier's funeral actually organized by anti-gay church «On the August 30 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Fox News host Sean Hannity falsely blamed "the anti-war left" for a protest at the August 28 funeral of Sgt. Jeremy Doyle of Indianapolis, who was killed while serving in Iraq. Hannity read excerpts of an article on the website of Indianapolis TV station WISH describing the protest, adding, "I guess this is just another example of how the anti-war left supports our brave troops." In fact, as The Indianapolis Star reported, the protesters were not anti-war liberals but, rather, members of Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) in Topeka, Kansas, who claim that the deaths of U.S. soldiers in Iraq are inflicted by God to punish the United States for its acceptance of gays and lesbians.»
