About

Epistemic closure is a manipulative tool for promoting ideological protectionism.

With the goal of getting the audience to believe that a certain thing (or set of things) is true, epistemic closure works by:

  • exposing the audience to a body of works which all agree on the target belief (citing each other as sources when necessary)
  • discouraging the audience from consulting any sources outside this body by using emotional arguments (e.g. encouraging the idea that such works are untrustworthy, immoral, or harmful)

Epistemic closure is found frequently in US conservative philosophy and punditry.
