Overview

The idea of liberal media bias, i.e. that there is a strong liberal skewing of the mainstream media (especially in the United States, where this is actually less true than in Europe), seems to be very popular in certain circles of a predominantly neoconservative flavor. (Presumably it goes without saying that the newer media, such as blogs and Wikipedia, are hopelessly mired in their liberal roots – except for those explicitly declared to be of a conservative bent.)

This claimed bias is then used to effectively discredit any information which the neoconservative establishment wants suppressed without actually having to rationally argue against the validity of that information.

also known as: liberal media conspiracy, liberal media elite

Conclusions

Since freedom of the press is a liberal concept, it would seem inevitable that independent media (who depend upon that principle for their livelihood) would tend to favor liberal ideology.

What is not clear is the reason why anyone, much less conservatives, would feel this is bad for America, as America itself was founded on this and other liberal concepts (democracy, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc.). The obvious conclusion to draw is that those who see liberal media bias as a bad thing are in favor of increasing media consolidation and may even be working for one of the arms of the global media empire, directly or indirectly.
