Overview

By the time the second plane hit, a large number of cameras were already pointed at the twin towers, making the second impact and subsequent collapses almost certainly the most thoroughly-filmed disaster of all time, if not the most thoroughly-filmed event. This has provided something of a counterbalance to the extremely poor conduct of the official post-collapse investigations, but has also opened many questions which may never be answered satisfactorily.

The unusualness of this is highlighted by the fact that the cost of video-recording technology had been decreasing substantially in the years leading up to the event; video recording of major disasters (with substantial survivorship, anyway) is likely to be more and more thorough as time goes by due to the continued price drops and the growing ubiquity of new devices such as video cell phones and video-capable PDAs.

• NBC4 Live Video vs. CNN "Anonymous Contributor" Video: perplexingly, the first video (NBC4) shows no plane, despite being shot from higher and more or less the same view as the CNN video, which clearly does show it. The CNN video is shot from significantly to the right, however (check the location of the wide black building vs. the twin towers), so possibly the plane was hidden behind the towers and smoke in the NBC video. Is this the source of the "no-plane theories"?
  • Two Live Shots vs Two Fake 911 Hoax Videos: 4 frames, synched within about 1 second; one of the no-plane frames is the NBC4 video above, and the other no-plane frame is from pretty much the exact same angle. Any different angles showing no plane?
  • Zooming in on the 911 Hoax: Four Shots Contrasted Analyzed: shows where the plane is in the NBC4 and WB11 videos; adds 2 other videos which it claims are faked, but this conclusion seems based on very tenuous evidence which isn't examined.

• "9/11 WTC south tower collapse amateur video": Dr. Mark Heath. Good shots of debris cloud as it engulfs the narrator. Rather blurry overall. Lots of footage of trampling through the dust. Weird insect-like noises; Dr. Heath comments on them, doesn't know what they are. Sirens clogged with dust, maybe?

• The True Lies of 9/11 (Part I) (where are other parts?): somewhat overdramatic documentary arguing that Flight 175 was not what brought the building down. Presents conflicting descriptions of the plane. Recording of USA Today correspondent Jack Kelley saying that the FBI believed there was most likely a car or truck underneath the building packed with explosives which went off at the same time as the plane impact "the working theory at this point; unconfirmed"; Pat Dawson quotes (probably Albert Turi) about a secondary device. Same set of eyewitness reports of explosions as in another video, maybe some new ones.

Anti-anomaly

• a teen or 20-something guy objects to the objections:
  • he claims no professional structural engineers agree with the "controlled demolition" theory; this is false (this may be an honest mistake on the part of the video author)
  • he cites the Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse as being a similar example of a failure mode not previously encountered, implying that the WTC collapses could be another such phenomenon. What he overlooks, of course, is that in the case of Tacoma Narrows, engineers intensely studied what had happened until they understood (a) why it had happened despite the best design practices of the day, and (b) how to prevent it again. If the WTC collapses were, in fact, due entirely to structural damage and heat from the airplane impact/fire, this would represent a gap in our understanding of structural steel engineering -- one which needs to be filled. Either the collapses came as a huge surprise and structural engineers were caught with their pants down, or the collapses were not due solely to the planes. There is no option to say "the planes hit the buildings and they collapsed, where's the surprise?".

• the well-known BBC news piece about WTC7 collapse before it happened: WTC7 which is clearly visible behind reporter Jane Standley's head. This particular upload has some very anti-semitic commentary with it.
• CNN also says they have info that WTC7 has collapsed or will soon collapse, although commentator seems to be aware that this contradicts reality. Airplane is also heard in this video. There do seem to be large amounts of smoke billowing from the far side of WTC7, though absolutely nothing from the front. (What is the geometry of the situation? Could all that smoke be from the rubble of WTC1&2?) Includes same anti-semitic article; there seem to be a lot of uploads by the same group of people which all have the same comments.
• video alleging that the WTC2 impact was real-time computer animation, and the impact was actually a missile; compares several different views of the impact and explains how (and why) some are real and some are faked. The "nose-out error" he mentions, however, is consistent with videos from the right side of the impact which do clearly (at least in slo-mo) show the nose emerging from the far side before being engulfed in flame.
  • The idea of "real-time computer animation" seems among the farthest of the far-fetched theories, unless someone can show technology capable of doing this reasonably well and reliably even now (much less in 2001)
