Overview

The (Persian) Gulf War was a 1991 conflict between Iraq and a coalition force from 35 nations authorized by the United Nations (UN) and led primarily by the United States, then under president George H.W. Bush, in order to liberate Kuwait.

Bush was strongly criticized for allowing Saddam Hussein to remain in power after the war; however, his Defense Secretary, Dick Cheney, predicted that invading Baghdad would lead the US into a quagmire.^{2007-08-17 TP}
